It is my pleasure to open this edition of our quarterly newsletter as we approach the end of 2025 - a year that has brought remarkable momentum, important breakthroughs, and renewed confidence to the global robotics community.

Nominate a “Women Shaping the Future of Robotics in 2026”

IFR would like to give visibility and acknowledge Women in the Robotics industry that serve as a role model for the next generation. We will - once again - select a list of 10 women to officially award as “IFR's Women in Robotics: 10 Women Shaping the Future of Robotics” in 2026.

IERA Award 2026 - Call for Application

IFR and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE/RAS) are looking for applicants for the next IERA Award. The final takes place at ICRA on 4 June 2026 in Vienna. Submission deadline is 15 February 2026.

Pioneering Robot “OTTO” Wins the 2025 IERA Award

The 2025 IERA Award goes to OTTO by Rockwell Automation for its pioneering achievement in developing the company’s autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). OTTO was the first company to build an AMR solution capable of transporting heavy loads in factories and operating in robot fleets larger than 100 units, setting a technological milestone in professional service robotics.

Service Robots See Global Growth Boom

The total number of service robots sold for professional use reached almost 200,000 units in 2024, marking a 9% increase. Staff shortages are a key driver for companies to use robots designed for trained professionals. At the same time, the growing elderly population is increasing demand for medical robots.

IFR Best Paper Award goes to Ainhoa Urtasun

Ainhoa Urtasun, Associate Professor at Universidad Pública de Navarra, received the first IFR Best Paper Award for her work on the introduction of robots in US manufacturing plants. Her key findings are that robotization creates new opportunities for employment and skill development in adopting plants and firms.
